Why I Organize
by Nicolette Ratcliffe, Milwaukee
Being an organizer is difficult but at the very same time can be the best job in the world! Although, doing this job at 18 years old can be a challenge in itself. You face many obstacles ranging from the need for supervision, to difficulties of leadership and the great amount of responsibility organizing requires. However, knowing you are fighting for a purpose can turn those challenges into rewards and lead you to becoming a brilliant organizer.
Being in a supervisory position, you have to make difficult decisions. You have to know exactly what message you’re trying to send, who your targeting, what’s your plan and how will you execute it. That’s where the leadership comes in. You are in charge of organizing a team, finding out peoples’ strengths and weakness and placing them where they work best. You are also have to meet your quotas. If your team doesn’t perform then it’s a burden you share, but it is your responsibility as an organizer to make sure that doesn’t happen. Data entry is the most crucial part of being an organizer. You have to input the number of door knocks, phone calls, volunteers, etc. to prove you are actually doing what you say you are doing. THE NUMBERS MUST MATCH UP!!!
Doing all of this sounds hard enough, but imagine trying to canvass your community when no one takes you seriously. Your peers may not know how to react to seeing a person our age being so involved. In the end it’s all worth it knowing you are in your community working to make a difference. You can change the world by changing your community, and changing you community starts with you! So please pledge to vote and get involved, trust me – it is so worth it.
